Mobility as Freedom in Critical Art and New Media

An unpublished examination of the rise of mobility and nomadism as an unquestioned value in contemporary art and new media. I look briefly at criticisms that arose along the way, and at the applicability of recent mobility studies to art discourse.

Critical Spatial Practice

A reading and working group started with Nicholas Brown, Ryan Griffis, Sharon Irish, and Sarah Kanouse. Meeting bi-weekly with a larger group of students and faculty. Projects and perhaps an exhibition in the works.

Science of Design

A collaboration with Human Computer Interaction researcher Brian Bailey, this new effort seeks to develop tools for understanding and facilitating rich development processes for interactive art and design. Efforts will include new curricula, software, and possibly hardware.

Absence in Common: an Operator for the Inoperative Community

Accepted as part of the "Community Domain" theme of the 2006 ISEA symposium. A look at the importance of acknowledged absence to recovery from trauma, and as such also to the construction of networked social connections.

Mobility as Freedom in Critical Art and New Media v.1

This first attempt at applying mobility studies to a critique of work in contemporary art and new media focused on analysis of a work by the Grafitti Research Lab.

The Department of Rhythmanalysis implements a site-specific state-of-the-art system for the control and surveillance of remote and local rhythms, through an array of indicators, sensors, buttons and switches.

Mobile Mapping for Everyday Spaces

A collaborative effort with M. Simon Levin, Laurie Long and Piotr Adamczyk. We merged research and teaching to initiate production and discussion around themes of walking, collaboration, mapping, and locative media.
